25–year–old Lance Carr made his first court appearance today in Hennepin County. Carr is charged with first degree assault.
Prosecutors say Carr severely beat a Brooklyn Park police officer. The incident happened early Sunday morning when police were called to a town home complex in the northern section of the city after someone complained about loud music coming from a parked car. According to court documents, Lance Carr was in that vehicle. Police found out he had a warrant and tried to arrest him.
Police say in the process of arresting Carr, he turned around and punched the officer several times. They say Carr also used a choke hold on the officer and then appeared to reach for the officer's gun. The weapon did discharge, but no on was hit.
The officer was injured and taken away on a stretcher. But he has since been released from the hospital. His name has not been released.
