Close to three-quarters of new mothers experience the baby blues – a short-lived emotional response in which they feel irritable, restless and anxious. But postpartum depression, which affects around 1 out of 7 new moms, is different; it's more serious and needs treatment to go away. Many women who experience postpartum depression begin to feel its effects one week to several weeks after giving birth. The good news is that postpartum depression is treatable.
