Smoking cigarettes is already known to be one of the most harmful things you can do to your body. It has been directly linked to lung cancer and various other types of cancers and terminal diseases. Although it is very deadly, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 40 million Americans still smoke cigarettes.
One aspect of cigarette smoking many people may not consider is that it constricts the nutrients from getting to the body to heal it after any type of facial plastic surgery, or any type of surgery, for that matter.
When a facelift patient undergoes surgery, Dr. Kevin Smith, founder of the Smith Center in Houston and a board certified facial plastic surgeon, advises they avoid smoking before and after their surgery. These are for various reasons. Here are just a few:
●The face needs to heal and therefore it requires oxygen
●Smokers take in poisons with their oxygen when smoking
●The blood vessels become tightened
●Smoking causes larger and thicker post-surgery scars
●Smoking causes wound breakdown
●Smoking increases the risk of infection
●Smoking prolongs the swelling phase
“I will typically know if someone has been smoking,” Dr. Smith says. “It’s just a matter of me smelling it on their breath and then documenting it so when they come at me about something that went wrong, I can say, ‘Well, we were in this together and you have to do your part. And that’s what I tell patients ‘You need to do your part and I’ll do my part.’”
If you are a smoker and are considering any type of facial plastic surgery, including facelift (rhytidectomy), then we strongly urge you to quit smoking well before you make the choice to undergo the operation. We also encourage you to stop smoking altogether.
If you plan to receive a facelift procedure, then you should contact our office located in River Oaks and schedule your consultation appointment.
