Hey guys! Today I wanted to show you what it sounds like when I practice blues improvisation.
This is something I’ve worked hard on over the past year and I’m quite happy with how I’ve progressed in that time but as with anything on the guitar, there’s always more work to be done.
I think that recording yourself and listening back on a regular basis can be a helpful way of analysing your playing and figuring out what aspects of your improv require more attention. I’d recommend that you start doing it in your practice if you’re not already.
If I could comment on the solos presented here, what I think I need to work on the most is stringing my ideas together in a more coherent manner. I notice that there’s a lot of licks played here that sound quite disconnected from each other and so I could do with spending more time working on the gradual development of motifs throughout my solos.
I also wanted to post these clips to show you guys that practice should not sound perfect. There’s a growing misconception about players you see online nowadays where we assume that the ‘perfect’ take that everyone posts is an accurate representation of the quality of their playing from behind closed doors when the cameras are off.
Of course that’s not the case - we’re all human and we all make mistakes every day. So just remember that whilst it’s certainly sometimes a good idea to strive for perfection, it’s also healthy for you to accept that you will always hear little flaws in your playing and that’s 100% normal.
