Vintage NASA documentary about the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program.
The program was controversial and nearly cost the lives of the three American astronauts. The Soviets gained an inside look at how NASA operated and built spacecraft, U.S. docking technology was transferred, and due to missed switches on a pre-reentry checklist, the American astronauts were nearly killed. The mission took five years to plan and lasted to days.
A Skylab 2 was built, but would never fly in lieu of this mission. Skylab 1 would be left in space hoping for salvation from the Space Shuttle, but the Shuttle came too late and with the end of the Apollo-Soyuz mission the American Space Program would sit idle until 1981.
