Artistic 3D representation of a clogged blood vessel due to a Sickle cell disease (SCD). Helix Animation team made this pro bono visualization in order to acknowledge World Sickle Cell Day (19th June) and make a small contribution towards raising awareness for the disease .
SCD is a genetic condition that happens when a child inherits the hemoglobin S gene, from each parent.
According to the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, SCD is caused by defects, called mutations, in the beta globin gene that helps make hemoglobin. Normally, hemoglobin in red blood cells takes up oxygen in the lungs and carries it through the arteries to all the cells in the tissues of the body. Red blood cells that contain normal hemoglobin are disc-shaped and flexible, whereas in SCD the red blood cells are shaped like sickles or crescent moons.
