Barik-motte, lamb-mottve, mel'le zaum, sukon gel'le,
Bhattantle, madd katrunu,
Hadd'ttai ami, khandar marunu.
Kovari-cher, dhonn marun, okhondd gauntti, madd foddun,
Tastai ami tasnnem gheunu,
Ani ditai, ami vanxe korunu.

Spigaum-adbar-patti-vanxe, korn ditai gauntti maddache,
Hamp ghalun, koriar tasunu,
Zai toxe, ditai korunu.
Sat-atth-nnov-hatinche, lamb zai tor bara hatinche,
Adinch fuddem, dovrai sangonu,
Anik, ghoram xinvai, vanxe vhoronu.

Kedim vhoddlim, adlim gharam, nidho ugtim, ghalun dharam,
Bore asle, sust nidhonu,
Ravon, nolleanchea gharanu.
Atam, burghe amche, zale vhoddle, Cidadin vhoddle, gheile bongle,
Gharam piddear, valloi lagonu,
Pun hanv, sukhi asam, pornnea gharanu.

GOAN COCONUT TRUNK RAFTERS
Hoisted on our shoulders we bear the trunks
Of the coconut trees, whether broad or slender, dwarf or tall,
Dead or wilted in our orchard lands, we cut them all.
Hammering the wedge with the hefty mallet,
We split the coconut trunk wide (like an open wallet);
Shave it with an adze and thereafter
We are ready with many a coconut trunk rafter.

Main beam, cross-beam, upright or rafter,
Made to order by the local coconut trunk crafter.
Notched or grooved as you want it,
Lengths vary from seven cubits to nine cubits;
Even of twelve cubits, if longer is how you need it.
Book in advance, do not take a risk,
Use coconut rafters for your roofing matrix.

With doors ajar we slept peacefully
In the huge houses, built beautifully.
Sound sleep we can remember with smiles,
Oh! The life under a roof of country tiles.
Our children have all grown up
And moved to bungalows in the city hub.
Termites have brought down many a roof
But my happiness is a coconut raftered, tiled roof!
