On Wednesday, March 8, snow and ice has begun to blanket the UK after local authorities issued a five-day weather alert. In England, schools as far south as Hampshire have closed due to snow. Train services have been suspended in parts of London, the South, and across Wales with other services affected by wintry weather across the country.
Commuters in South East London were seen standing on a snowy platform at Petts Wood train station. Police have issued a warning against travel in some parts of the south, as Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Surrey are hit by snowfalls.
Snow covers the roofs and the steep cobbled street at Gold Hill in Dorset. Meanwhile, Bristol Airport has suspended all flights after snow fell across the west of England.
Northern regions recorded snow overnight and there have already been road closures and vehicles left stranded. Drivers have been urged to pack extra provisions in their vehicles in case they become stranded in treacherous conditions.
In addition, dozens of schools in the Scottish Highlands and Wales have already announced closures due to treacherous snowy conditions.
Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in place for the south and east of England, south Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland until early Thursday.
The Met Office also warned that ice will be an additional hazard through the week as regions experience sub-zero temperatures.
The channel lists such natural disasters as:
1) Geological emergencies: Earthquake, Volcanic eruption, Mud, Landslide, Avalanche;
2) Hydrological emergencies: Flood, Tsunami, Limnological disaster,
3) Fires: Forest fire, Peat fire;
4) Meteorological emergencies: Tornado, Cyclone, Blizzard, Hail, Drought, Tornado, Hail, Hurricane, Tsunami, Storm, Thunderstorm, Tempest.
