After the Second World War, there were many executions that took place to bring war criminals to justice and many of these were conducted in public. Ferenc Szalasi was announced as 'The Leader of the Nation,' of Hungary for a period of around 160 days after Adolf Hitler and the Nazis put him and his Arrow Cross Party in control. He was a far-right leader, but despite not being in power in Hungary for a long time, he committed huge atrocities that led to him being executed for treason in Budapest.
When Szalasi came into power, he resumed the large scale deportations to the concentration camps, and around 15,000 people were executed during the months he remained in charge. His Arrow Cross Party fought alongside the German Army against the Soviet Red Army, and after the war Ferenc Szalasi was sentenced to death for treason. He was brought into a public square in Budapest where thousands of people witnessed his execution which took place using the pole method.
