Dr Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, said that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine “far outweigh its risk” and its use “should continue to save lives”.
Addressing a WHO press briefing on Thursday, he said it was “routine to signal adverse events” but people should “have confidence” in the protection given by vaccines.
It comes as Britain’s vaccine supply setback took a new turn today when it emerged that India’s government had delayed five million doses of the Oxford jab being sent to the UK.
As millions of people in their forties were told they will have to wait a month longer to get their first jabs, all the signs pointed to India having stepped in to prioritise its own roll-out.
