Dr. Graeme Reed, Medical Director of The Family Doctor and Ali'i Nani Aesthethic Medicine demonstrates aspiration of ganglion cyst on left wrist. Ganglion cysts are noncancerous lumps that most commonly occur along the tendons or joints of your wrists or hands. They are typically round or oval and are filled with thick jellylike fluid. Sometimes they go away on their own but they can potentially cause pain or discomfort when a surrounding nerve is pressed by the bulge.
The procedure was explained to the patient with risks, benefits, alternatives and all questions were answered and written and verbal consent obtained. Landmarks were identified and the area was cleaned using povidone iodine. The area was cooled and 2mL of 2% lidocaine with epinephrine was used to obtain anesthesia. An 18-gauge needle was used to aspirate approximately 1 mL of clear thick fluid. 0.5 mL of 40 mg/mL Kenalog was injected into the site. The patient tolerated the procedure well, estimated blood loss was 0 and aftercare instructions were given including instructions to avoid any exertion or stress on the hand for 2 to 3 days.
