Laboratory work is in many cases slow, steady and somewhat dull. It is can be everything from plating microbes, pippeting chemicals, cells or DNA, and more. This applies to diagnostic and basic research laboratories. It is very much the same basic steps repeated hundreds of times a day to get reliable and definitive results.

This image is not what Hollywood often depicts. Why would they? It is dull, dreary and realistic.

Hollywood often shows laboratory work conducted in much higher security laboratories than is warranted,. In other cases they show work being done in appropriately low level laboratories. What is nearly always missed or improperly depicted
is the environment of the laboratory.

Yes, you may see bubble suits, PC4 labs and glove boxes but that is not the whole or even remotely realistic image.

In fact it is often the bio safety cabinets that are often gotten wrong.

These are the one thing in a laboratory that is essential for the safety of workers and the environment. This does not underplay the role of aseptic techniques and PPE but is important. A biosafety cabinet is a confined space with airflow, UV light and filtration.

As a biosafety cabinet level progresses the degree of protection it provides goes up. That is an over simplification. A biosafety cabinet is a very complex construction with many parts that ensure safety.

It could from anything from E. coli that is found in the environment. It could be a pathogenic sample of E.coli tht caused food poisoning. A biosafety cabinet at the high end could be used for research into Spanish influenza or small pox; extremely deadly diseases.

The last of these are exactly why you want an appropriately safe environment. That safe environment is found in a biosafety cabinet.
