The Federal Audit bill began the journey to becoming law in Nigeria in 2018 since the initial audit bill of the '60s. Through efforts of civil society organizations like PLSI, SERAP, CSJ, PERL, and Step Up Nigeria the bill passed through several readings at the National Assembly before it was passed. The bill reached the office of the President in 2019 but was never assented. Today we ask why a bill that could revolutionize the anti-corruption fight in Nigeria was not passed into law and why passing the Federal Audit bill is essential to the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
Our guests, Olusegenu Elemo (PLSI) and John Mutu (PERL) give us an update on the progress being made in the passage of the Federal bill, lessons they have learnt while advocating for the passage of the bill, and what can be done to better ensure the participation of citizens, media, CSO’s, and other stakeholders to engage government institutions towards getting a new audit bill re-introduced.
