My recent trip to the Moss Beach Distillery inspired this video for the song "Laura" by David Raksin. According to one version of the legend, "The Blue Lady," the ghost who haunts the former Prohibition era speakeasy, was in love with a pianist at the bar. Like Laura, the title character of the 1944 film noir classic, the Blue Lady was a beautiful young woman who was mysteriously murdered. However, this video is not about a crime of passion, but about loneliness and obsession. Director Otto Preminger gave composer David Raksin one weekend to compose the theme for "Laura". Raksin later said that when, over that weekend, his wife sent him a "Dear John" letter, the haunting theme seemed to write itself. Johnny Mercer later wrote the lyrics.
