Jose Fernandez sadly passed away early Sunday, September 25, 2016 on a boat with 2 of his other friends, Eduardo Rivero and Emilio Macias. We did not have the pleasure meeting Jose's other 2 friends, but we knew Jose quite well.
When he was already with the Marlin's organization at a young age of 20, we had already met him. In fact, on his 21st birthday, we treated him to his first shot of Bacardi 151; his reaction was that of pain but he said he'll take another...He was full of life, always happy and content, enjoying life as any young superstar would.
We didn't know Jose as the monstrous pitching ace that shook up all the MLB records at his young age; no, we only knew him as a kind, gentle and sweet young man who was mature and confident and generous at such a young age.You can't say that about too many people, but you could certainly say that about him. He was on the way of becoming a legend and certainly was already at his young age.
When news broke early Sunday morning about him and his friends passing away, all of us who knew him were completely devastated. How could this be? How is this even possible...
This has been a very difficult time for many of us and we weren't even a big part of his life. We can't imagine what his Mother, grandmother and pregnant girlfriend must be going through.
You see, Jose in all of his glory and charm overcame all races, religions, social statuses and age groups. He represented the true American dream where you could work hard and become someone special, and boy, was he something really special.
When he was a child, he used to walk around Cuba with rocks and a stick emulating a bat and baseball. That was how much he loved the game. His grandmother was instrumental in his early days of playing the game and he succeeded from there. It was always his lifelong dream to play in the MLB and worked hard at making that a reality.
He made 3 unsuccessful trips to the US however, on the 4th attempt he was successful. During his last attempt at night, he heard someone go overboard into the water and without hesitation, went into the ocean to save that person. When he got to that person he then realized it was his mother...Jose was only 15.
Jose and his family settled in Tampa where he went to high school. He was very successful and became a champion and was noticed by many MLB teams, but it was Miami where he wanted to be with so many of his fellow countrymen, and the rest as they say is history.
You can read and even watch as many videos as you wish regarding the life of Jose. We wish we knew him more, because he stood for everything positive and truly had a heart for kids, the sick and even the less fortunate. He would always take the time to sign autographs and have regular conversations with his fans.
We didn't know Jose as the Miami Marlins' monstrous pitching ace, we knew him as a customer. When you're a server in a restaurant and someone of his stature comes in, it is at that moment that their true personality comes out. He was a kind, compassionate, gentle and sweet person that will be sorely missed at NoVe.... And yes...we knew Jose. Rest In Peace brother. I'm sure where you're at you're pitching no hitters all day long...
