Do you know New York City is considering a proposal to expand the Manhattan Island?
In an ambitious proposal to tackle the City's dual crises of housing and climate change, Rutgers University Professor Jason Barr suggested a groundbreaking solution of extending Manhattan Island.
Dubbed the "New Mannahatta," this 1,760-acre reclaimed land would stretch into the Harbor, aiming to house 247,000 people in 180,000 new homes along with parks and a subway line.
Not only would this provide much-needed affordable housing, but it would also fortify the city against the devastating impacts of rising sea levels and storm surges.
The proposal includes the creation of wetlands and marshlands to absorb potential floodwaters, enhancing the city's resilience.
