In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to use a gauge wheel to determine the size or thickness of wire and sheet metal.
The gauge wheel is a simple tool with no moving parts. But, if you don't know how to use it correctly, you could end up making a mistake that could cost you. This is especially true if you are preparing models and technical drawings for mass production of an item. Too thick or too much metal makes an item heavy. That adds to your production costs as well as your shipping costs. Too thin or not enough metal may result in structural problems or deformation of an item.
