There are 24 farms around the lake of Vernago and 60 farms in Val Senales. The research focuses on Tisenhof and Finailhof which are historical farms since 1290 but there was human activity from the stone age. So, we can understand that alpine farming and grazing is doing here for thousands of years. Transhumance means in Latin trans (across) humus (ground) the preparation of the shepherds and the farms is very important so that we can see the highest green level of the plant species. Grazing is continuing since the Ötzi times which is the oldest form of shaping the landscape in an anthropological timescale.
In the upper section of the Val Senales, the maximum limits of the mountain farming settlements are reached, the Finailhöf (1953 m) are (or were) among the highest grain farms in the Alps. The annual sheep drive over the Ötztal main ridge of the Alps still bears witness to the former importance of transhumance. This enables the sheep farmers from Schnalstal and Vinschgau to use their grazing areas in the upper Ötztal above Vent. In June, thousands of sheep are driven along two routes (Hochjoch and Niederjoch) over a distance of up to 44 km with an increase in altitude of 3,200 m and a descent of 1,800 m over the Ötztal main ridge to the summer pasture areas before they return on the same paths in September.
Val Senales is located in Ötztal Alps and it is an important location for Alpine farming and transhumance. Slopes are covered either by a spruce forest (Piceetum montanum) or by a downy oak-pine forest (Antherico liliaginis-Pinetum sylvestris), inner-alpine pine forest (Astragalo-Pinetum sylvestris) and steppe vegetation (Stipeto-Poion xerophilae, Xerobromion), superseded in the subalpine zone by a larch-arolla pine forest (Larici-Pinetum cembrae) and pure larch stands (Laricetum). Today many of the farms in Val Venosta give their sheep flock to the experienced shepherds to graze them in high altitudes peaks of Tisen valley and Maso Kurtzas.
We joined the transhumance and stayed with the shepherds and slept with the sheep in the high altitude to understand how ancient grazing methods and traditional ecological knowledge shape the landscape in Val Senales, Italy.

Çobanların ve çiftliklerin hazırlanması, bitki türlerinin en yüksek yeşil seviyesini görebilmemiz için çok önemlidir. Antropolojik zaman ölçeğinde peyzajı şekillendirmenin en eski biçimi olan yaylacılık, Ötzi döneminden bu yana devam ediyor.
Val Senales'in üst kısmında, dağ çiftçiliği yerleşimlerinin maksimum sınırlarına ulaşılmıştır; Finailhöf (1953 m), Alpler'in en yüksek tahıl çiftlikleri arasındadır. Alplerin Ötztal ana sırtında her yıl yapılan koyun sürüsü, hâlâ yaylacılığın eski önemine tanıklık ediyor. Bu, Schnalstal ve Vinschgau'daki koyun çiftçilerinin Vent'in yukarısındaki üst Ötztal'deki otlatma alanlarını kullanmalarına olanak tanıyor. Haziran ayında binlerce koyun, iki rota (Hochjoch ve Niederjoch) boyunca, Ötztal ana sırtı üzerinden 3.200 m rakım artışı ve 1.800 m iniş ile 44 km'ye kadar bir mesafe boyunca yazlık mera alanlarına sürülüyor. Bugün Val Venosta'daki çiftliklerin çoğu, koyun sürülerini Tisen vadisi ve Maso Kurtzas'ın yüksek rakımlı zirvelerinde otlatmaları için deneyimli çobanlara veriyor.
İtalya'nın Val Senales kentinde eski otlatma yöntemlerinin ve geleneksel ekolojik bilginin peyzajı nasıl şekillendirdiğini anlamak için yaylacılığa katıldık ve çobanlarla birlikte yüksek rakımlarda koyunları otlattık.
