It was from Seville ('the capital of commerce') that Spanish galleons went out to the Indies to reap the riches of the New World. And the Alcazar was always central to these expeditions. Behind its massive walls, Queen Isabel founded a Chamber of Commerce for America which organised many forays across the Atlantic and where she received Columbus on his return from his second voyage. Eventually, the former Spanish colonies would send other riches back to the Iberian peninsula, such as the music of the Paraguayan composer Agustin Barrios Mangoré. John Williams plays this piece in the garden of El Estanque, designed in the sixteenth century, whose large pool overlooks the extensive informal gardens of exotic shrubs and trees and cool bowers.
