We go through the motions day after day without really being aware of what we're doing or why we're doing it. This, Gurdjieff believed, is because we are asleep.
According to Gurdjieff, we can only awaken from our sleep state if we receive help from someone who is already awake. This person can be a teacher, guru, or even a friend who has awoken from their own sleep state and can help us to do the same. Once we receive this help, we can begin to work on awakening ourselves.
