Heather Burning Season on The North York Moors National Park takes place between October and Mid April every year.
Although The burning is permitted until mid April it is often stopped long before that to stop damage to ground nesting birds which have often taken up residence in March.
heather burning, I believe takes place to rejuvenate heather growth which increases the number of young shoots for moorland birds like grouse to feed on.
