The British conquest of India was a gradual process that took place over several centuries, starting with the arrival of the British in India, subsequently the establishment of the British East India Company in the early 17th century and culminating in the establishment of direct British rule over most of the Indian subcontinent by the mid-19th century.
The British East India Company was established in 1600. In 1612, the company established its first trading post in Surat. As the company expanded its trading operations, it also encountered political challenges and conflicts with Indian rulers and other European powers in India. Through a combination of alliances, military force, and diplomacy, the company gradually gained control over different regions.
One significant turning point in the British conquest was the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The company's control expanded further after its victory in the Battle of Buxar in 1764. Policies like the Doctrine of Lapse and the Subsidiary Alliance were introduced to annex princely states and expand their territorial control.
