One of the most notorious soiled doves in early Sacramento history was Ida Vanard, also known as Ida Brewer. On October 21, 1853, she was accused of murdering Mary Lee at the saloon and house of ill repute managed by Ann Woods, located on Second Street between I and J Streets.
On December 28, 1853, a trial was held and Ida was found not guilty on grounds that were rather surprising. While the audience applauded the verdict, this wasn’t the last time Ida broke the law.
