In the last chapter, Rudy competed in the Hitler Youth carnival. His goal was to win all four races. He wins his first three races but gets disqualified in the fourth before he even starts running. Later, he tells Liesel that he got himself disqualified on purpose but only smiles when she asks why. After Rudy leaves, Liesel realizes he left his three fake gold medals. She runs the back to Rudy but he explains he left them there on purpose. Liesel takes the medals to Max and tells him about Rudy. While Max writes his book, Liesel reads. She steals yet another book from the library titled “A Song in the Dark”. One week later, Liesel finds a dictionary resting on the window that she sneaks into to steal books from the library. Inside is a letter written by Ilsa explaining that she knows that Liesel is stealing books and that she hopes she’ll be able to work up the courage to take them in a nicer manner soon. She also apologizes again for ending business with Rosa. Liesel goes back to the door, wanting to talk to Ilsa but can’t bring herself to knock on the door.
