I have a fun one for you guys today. In this "I Only Lie When I Love You" guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this hit by Royal Blood in it's entirety.

As I mention in the video lesson, bassist/lead vocalist Mike Kerr has a very unique setup that includes splitting the single coming from his bass into multiple signals. One of these (I am guessing), is routed through some sort of octave or whammy pedal that raises the pitch an octave into the guitar's range. From there, that signal goes into a guitar amp setup.

Whatever it is that Mike Kerr is using to achieve his sound, it sounds HUGE when it is all put together. What I will be demonstrating in this guitar lesson is how to play those killer bass riffs just like he does, albeit on a guitar. If you have a conventional band setup, both the guitar and bass can play these same riffs just like I teach in the lesson to achieve the same sound that Mike Kerr does with just one bass guitar.

Also, the tuning for this is quite low. The guitars are tuned down a minor third. You really only need to tune down the 3 bottom strings of the guitar or bass to play all of the single-note riffs and those pitches are, starting from the 6th string on a guitar, C# F# B.

"I Only Lie When I Love You" contains a main riff that is played throughout most of the song. I call this the A section since we really don't have a typical verse, chorus setup for this song.

The B section contains a riff that is a bit more intricate. The B section is also slightly different the second time you hear it towards the end of the song.

At the very end on the song will have a really cool outro riff that is a variation of the main riff. They manage to throw some unexpected rhythmic twists into this outro riff while maintaining a really killer groove. You will also want to pay close attention to which part of this riff you let ring and which part you apply muting between the notes to help give it it's rhythmic punch.
