Body snatchers also preyed on the cemeteries of Dublin, particularly the sprawling Glasnevin cemetery, which, at 124 acres, is now the final resting place of more than one million people.
The walls and towers surrounding the graveyard may look decorative, but they served a grim purpose: they were built to protect the dead from the epidemic of grave robbing in early 19th-century Dublin
Dublin anatomy schools and the Royal College of Surgeons required vast numbers of bodies for dissection. Adult remains fetched £2, while children's bodies were sold by the inch. But cadavers were in short supply -- a situation that created a lucrative prospect for the less discerning of Dublin's entrepreneurs of the time.
Cemeteries employed a wide range of methods to thwart grave robbers -- placing heavy stone slabs over graves, installing cages around them, paying watchmen and erecting walls and watch towers.
Glasnevin even erected a mobile watchtower that could be moved around as fresh graves were dug.
Public outrage eventually forced legislators to pass the British 1832 Anatomy Act, which provided anatomists with a legal source of cadavers, and grave robbing quickly declined.

While Glasnevin contains the graves of Michael Collins and Daniel O'Connell, statesmen such as Eamon de Valera, writers including Brendan Behan and musicians such as The Dubliners' Luke Kelly, some of its most fascinating stories concern the ordinary people buried in its grounds, according to Shane MacThomais.
