The hit is the ninth in England published single by Depeche Mode and the last release from the album "Construction Time Again". The content is kept pretty simple. The protagonist notes that he had only love in mind, but now finds that love "as such" is not enough to be happy. The chronology of the Depeche Mode singles is the band's last hit before the big international breakthrough a few months later with the hit "People Are People". Only in 1984, the band thus made the jump in the US charts. While "Love, In Itself" landed in the midfield of the German charts in 1983, "People Are People" made it to the very top of the Media Control list.
"Love, In Itself" is written by Martin Gore as a zeitgeist synthpop, and a rather forgotten single by the band Depeche Mode. Not deserved, because Dave Gahan builds a great tension in the song and proves to be a dynamic singer. In addition, the use of the acoustic guitar in alternation with the piano is quite experimental and playful. These instruments are extensively used in the Maxi versions of the Depeche Mode song. There is no available official video for "Love, In Itself".
By the way, the green cover design of "Love, In Itself" seemed to have been the inspiration for the later solo project of Marin Gore. The cover of "Counterfeit" looks like a later adaptation of "Love, In Itself".
