Think about the first time you had sex. Do you remember feeling ready? Were you sure you were doing something you really wanted to? That the other person was? Do you remember communicating consent – yours and theirs? If you didn’t answer “yes” to all of those questions – why?
In this talk, Elaine Byrnes, discusses the reasons why we may not answer "yes" to all of these questions, outlining how most of us didn’t learn basic skills in sexual communication through our school based sex education. Consent wasn’t even considered. And, what the global impact could be on rates of sexual assault and violence if comprehensive sexuality education was available to all young people.
Elaine is a Doctoral Researcher at the School of Psychology, NUI, Galway. Her research area of interest is sexual behaviour, particularly the communication of consent. She has contributed to the Human Sexuality, Social Psychology and Developmental Psychology modules as a lecturer.
