On this day in 1949, George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, 1984, was published. In December 1983, as the year of reckoning approached, ITN spoke to Professor Peter Davidson, the man who had been tasked with editing Orwell’s complete works. Showing Orwell’s original manuscript to ITN’s cameras, Davidson explained how the meticulous author had agonised over minor details – including the year in which the story should be set.
