In this video I will be showing you how to prune apple trees during the winter. Winter pruning on apple trees is a great way to thin out dense overgrown apple trees. As the tree is at its most dormant time you are able to cut back and remove large branches to create a more open and balanced tree allowing more airflow and sunlight in to reduce pests and diseases, allow more of the trees energy and nutrients to go to the main fruiting limbs and help ripen the fruit. I go through every step of the way pruning six different shapes and types of apple trees explaining how and why cuts are made, training and improving the shape of the tree, and tips on getting the most out of your tree. As a general long term aim for an apple tree is to create lots of short stubby networks of fat budded fruit spurs close to the trees main branch framework. Prolonging the life of the tree and enabling it to produce good quality high yields of fruit. A real must for anyone wanting the balance of a well structured tidy and high yielding tree.
