On July 28, 2023, at approximately 10:30 PM, the Bloomfield Township Police Department in New Jersey received a report of a three-vehicle accident on Hoover Avenue. A moving vehicle had struck two parked cars. Officers William Reynolds, Jacky Chan, and Sergeant Robert Mazariegos were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, Officer Reynolds, as shown in this body camera footage, made contact with the driver, who immediately admitted to drinking alcohol at her cousin's house before attempting to drive her son home. She expressed that she should not have been driving. Her cousin, who was also at the scene, quickly intervened, attempting to downplay the incident.
After completing the investigation, Officer Reynolds placed the driver in custody for driving under the influence. At the police station, breath samples revealed her blood alcohol concentration was 0.15% BAC, nearly double the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle.
The driver was released to a friend and charged with DUI, careless driving, and DUI with a minor in the vehicle.
On February 6, 2024, she appeared in court and was found guilty of the DUI charge, with other charges dismissed as part of a plea agreement. She received a $690 fine, a four-month license suspension, and was required to install an ignition interlock device in her vehicle for 13 months after regaining her driving privileges.
