25 years ago, the Mississippi River crested at the St. Louis gage at 49.58 feet on Aug. 1 exceeding the previous record in ’73 by 6.35 feet. Seven U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Districts were involved in the flood fight: St. Paul, Rock Island, Detroit, St. Louis, Memphis, Kansas City and Omaha.
In the St. Louis District, more than 395 District employees actively participated in the flood fight, and distributed 13 million sandbags, 112 portable pumps, 163 rolls of snow fencing and 9,044 rolls of plastic during flood-fight operations.
