HARRISON, Ohio (Joe Webb) -- A Harrison couple is charged with child endangering after a hospital finds drugs in their baby's system. Matthew and Ashley Bickel were arrested last night.
Neighbor Dena Campbell suspected something was up because she hadn't seen the couple's five children since July 28th. "My kids told me the 8- and 9-year-old came over and told them that the baby was sick and not hardly breathing and that they left with her. They were telling the kids not to say nothin' to nobody."
According to court records, the Bickels took the baby to Children's Hospital Medical center on July 28th. At the hospital she tested positive for the heroin treatment drug suboxone, methamphetamine, amphetamine and nicotine. The records do not say how the drugs got in the girl's system.
Investigators also say the Bickels told them the baby got sick at Miami Whitewater park, not at their home. Two of their children told the same story but later said they were told to lie to investigators and admitted their sister fell ill at their house.
Campbell says Sheriff's deputies were at the Bickel's home in May. She says they have lots of visitors. "Just people in and out. Just go in for a second and come right back out. When we first moved in here we had needles in our driveway from where people over there was parking. We posted signs so no one could park here."
The Bickels are being held on $75,000 bond.
