O TANNENBAUM (O Christmas Tree) is a traditional German Christmas carol although it's "roots" (pun intended!) are not in Christmas. The original lyrics were written by a Leipzig teacher/organist in 1824 and they refer to the fir tree as a symbol of faithfulness. Only later as the tradition of the Christmas Tree developed throughout the 19th century did the song become a holiday tradition with added verses referring to the decorated tree.
