Whats up guys! Im Dr. Lindsay, a small animal veterinarian, and a common question I get on new puppy appointments is “How long should we be exercising our new 8 week old puppy?”
A new puppy can be completely weaned from their mother and come home at 8 weeks old.
New puppies are like having a new baby in the house. They need to be fed three times a day they require their owner to wake up in the middle of the night sometimes twice to take them out to the bathroom, and they require exercise and play time.
New puppies are very wild and bouncy balls of energy and that is why I get this question so often, of How long can we walk our puppy? Owners most likely want to tire out their puppies so they sleep and everyone can get a break.
And the Answer is that Puppies should have no more than 5 minutes of exercise for each month of age, two times a day.
This means that a 2 month old puppy should have no more than 10 minutes of walking time twice a day and 5 month old puppy would have no more than 25 minutes of walking time – twice a day.
Puppies’ growth plates remain open until they are about 1 years old, and for some large breed dogs such as Great Danes or Standard Poodles their growth plates may not close until they are 1 and ½ to 2 years old.
But don’t be too afraid to let your puppy play and run around like wild in the back yard or living room. Because even though we don’t want to over exercise them to hurt their growth plates, Puppies bones also need exercise to increase their bone density and for their bones to also grow properly. A puppy in a neglect situation that is kept in a crate and not exercised enough will sadly have severe bone growth damage as an adult dog.
Puppies less than 6 months old should also not do more than 5 minutes straight of walking time and allow their walks to be a time to stop and sniff, relax, explore and investigate their surroundings. You should even do some training on your walks of asking your puppy to sit and make some eye contact, and enjoy your time together, as this young age is when your puppy begins to bond with you the most.
When your dog turns 1 you might consider starting a joint supplement to support them as they age. This may seem early but supporting joint health throughout their life will help keep them active and healthy. Equally important is keeping your dog at a healthy weight because carrying too much weight is very hard on their joints!
