James Cook, (1728 -1779) known for his cutting edge cartography technique and expertise in recording an eclipse in Canada, was recommended to lead a voyage to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus- which would be used for further astronomical calculations at the headquarters of the Royal Society in London. Gentlemen scientists lobbied the Royal Navy to have him promoted from Master to Lieutenant, and it was this rank that he held during his first Pacific voyage (1767-1771) in which he travelled to Tahiti, New Zealand and the East coast of Australia. In this excerpt we discuss his time in Tahiti, and dealings with the local Polynesians. You can watch our full video here: [ Ссылка ]
