Cover video of Come Out and Play by Billie Eilish
The Story:
Last month, my sister Abby reached out to Cory and I to ask if we wanted to film her covering this song. We thought maybe we'd just set up our cameras, let them roll for a couple takes, and piece a neat lil' video together with a prompt turnaround time.
But one day, we met for coffee to discuss some details of the video. Originally, we planned on just going to shoot it at a local tree farm. But as the caffeine kicked in, Cory recalled something: he remembered that his haircut lady had mentioned something about tree houses in Red River Gorge.
About 10 minutes later, we had our treehouse, The Observatory, booked for the 20th and 21st of December. There was rain in the forecast, but it had a couple weeks to change, so we were good.
The week after this pivotal meeting, we went over to Jack Price's house to record Abby's audio for the cover. Just using Logic on his laptop and some minimal recording gear, Jack worked his magic. He mixed the song and re-built the instrumental from scratch.
As the shoot dates rapidly approached, I decided it was time to rent some gear. I went with the Rhino Slider EVO 42" with Motion and Arc. For those who aren't camera gear nerds, I would describe this piece of kit as a "big slidy boi" (basically a 4-foot roller coaster track for the camera to slide across, controlled by motors).
The day before our road trip to RRG, we went to the Cincinnati Nature Center in Milford, Ohio to get some test shots. Once we were all set up and about to roll, a kind CNC employee approached us while filming. To our surprise, she didn't kick us out! She really liked Abby's playing and suggested she play some gigs at the nature center.
December 20th, 2018: The weather forecast was right. It was supposed to rain for the entirety of our 30-hour window we had to film the video. I was thinking we wouldn't be able to shoot at Natural Bridge like we wanted to, because we couldn't get our camera gear or Abby's guitar wet for obvious reasons. But then Cory had a genius idea for staying dry: "what if we shoot UNDER Natural Bridge?" So we made our first stop there.
Our wonderful, FUN&QUIRKY™ production assistant Henry Czerwonka hauled the 25-lb pelican case containing the slider up the trail to the bridge. First, we shot Abby's performance. Then Cory, the king of b-roll, pulled quite the dangerous stunt, bridging the gap between two massive rocks to get the shots you see at around 0:40 in the video.
After wrapping on that scene, we checked in and brought all our gear to the treehouse. The Observatory is placed way up high, providing some pretty incredible views. That night, after eating some dehydrated apple pie and couscous, we shot a night scene in the kitchen, but it didn't make it into the video sadly because it just looked like any old room, and we really wanted to capture the scenery around us.
The next morning (Dec. 21), we woke up and SMELLED THE COFFEE HAHA GET IT
That morning we shot an outdoor scene with the treehouse in the background, and it was a total blessing because we actually had a perfect window where the rain stopped. Finally, we wrapped with the interior bedroom scene.
Especially under the circumstances we had to film the video, we're really happy with how it turned out. But more than anything, I'm super grateful for the experiences and memories made on this trip with these awesome people.
If you've read this far, thank you! I hope you enjoy the video.

Lyrics:
Wake up and smell the coffee
Is your cup half full or empty?
When we talk, you say it softly
But I love it when you're awfully quiet
Hmm, hmm quiet
Hmm, hmm
You see a piece of paper
Could be a little greater
Show me what you could make her
You'll never know until you try it
Hmm, hmm
And you don't have to keep it quiet
And I know it makes you nervous
But I promise you, it's worth it
To show 'em everything you kept inside
Don't hide, don't hide
Too shy to say, but I hope you stay
Don't hide away
Come out and play
Look up, out of your window
See snow, won't let it in though
Leave home, feel the wind blow
'Cause it's colder here inside in silence
You don't have to keep it quiet
Yeah, I know it makes you nervous
But I promise you, it's worth it
To show 'em everything you kept inside
Don't hide, don't hide
Too shy to say but I hope you stay
Don't hide away
Come out and play
