In June of 2010, the FBI arrested 11 Russian nationals for working as unregistered foreign agents in a ground breaking cold war style spy roundup called Operation Ghost Stories. This CIA and FBI task force spent close to a decade on this operation, watching these Russian spies, including the now famous Anna Chapman who had gotten into the most elite parts of society.
One of the overlooked aspect of this case was a novel new type of spycraft called steganography, which allowed them to hide secret messages inside publicly available images even viewable through a search of Google Images.
Today on MidnightDocs, let's take a second look at this case and the technology uncovered and what it means for the world of spies and spying in the modern world.
