(11 May 2016) Serbia's prime minister has warned that upcoming parallel rallies of opposed Bosnian Serb political camps in the Republika Srpska could lead to violence and instability.
Aleksandar Vucic appealed on Wednesday to both the government and opposition in the Republika Srpska, one of Bosnia Herzegovina's two constitutional entities, to ensure there are no incidents at the gatherings scheduled for Saturday.
Vucic said any instability in the Balkans would be dangerous and delay much needed economic recovery.
He added information about potential trouble at the rallies has come from the Serbian intelligence.
A Bosnian Serb opposition alliance has called the rally on Saturday as part of effort to bring down the government of nationalist President Milorad Dodik.
Corruption and poverty are widespread in the Republika Srpska, which has a majority population of Bosnian Serbs, more than 20 years after the end of the 1992-95 ethnic conflict in Bosnia that killed 100,000 people.
