(14 May 2018) Israel increased security in Jerusalem on Monday ahead of the opening ceremony for the new US Embassy.
Units around the diplomatic compound were expected to secure the area throughout the day.
US President Donald Trump took the controversial decision to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to contested Jerusalem in December, going forward with a campaign promise.
The decision was welcomed by Israel and condemned by the Palestinians as well as other countries in the region.
On Monday, fresh criticism against the relocation came from Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, the speaker of Iran's parliament, Turkey's president and two prominent newspapers in the United Arab Emirates.
On the same day, Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sharply reiterated Palestinian criticism of the move.
Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it in a move not recognized by the international community.
The Palestinians seek the city's eastern half as capital of a future state and say the move shows the US is not an impartial peace negotiator.
