Who knew the simple act of taking your volunteerism tax deductions could help you keep thousands of dollars in your pocket? Each year, hundreds of thousands of people log thousands of miles as they volunteer for their favorite church or non-profit - (501(c)(3) organization. However, almost no one takes advantage of the IRS Tax Code provision that allows volunteers to reduce the amount of money they pay in taxes.

Many people are aware business owners can take deductions for business miles driven and for medical or moving purposes. What they don’t know is this – volunteers have some options too. Volunteers have the option to take either Actual Cost or Mileage deductions, but not doing so leaves thousands of legal tax advantaged deductions untapped. Thus, leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table.

Volunteering for a Qualified Organization, but not taking your volunteer deductions, is the equivalent of telling your employer to keep that big bonus you deserve. Please understand, the Qualified Organization must be one that is recognized by the IRS as a non-profit organization.
