⭐️ Hagia Sophia and the Ani Cathedral
Did you know about the relationship between Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the Cathedral in the ancient city of Ani in Kars?
In the big earthquake of 989 in Istanbul, the dome of Hagia Sophia was damaged, along with 40 more churches in the city.
Byzantine Emperor in power, Basil II commissioned the Armenian architect Trdat to repair the dome of Hagia Sophia.
The same architect later built the Cathedral in Ani, this was at the beginning of the 11th century.
According to some experts, the clustered columns and stepped pointed arches of Ani Cathedral were the forerunners of Gothic architecture.
Gothic architecture was actually seen in France about 200 years later and spread throughout Europe.
