J. Michael Bishop held his Nobel Prize lecture on 8 December 1989, at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. He was introduced by Professor Nils Ringertz, Member of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1989 was awarded jointly to J. Michael Bishop and Harold E. Varmus "for their discovery of the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes".
