Oxygen Utilization 1 (UT1) workout:
Plan:
10' warm up at ut3/ut2
5' gradual transition to ut1 pressure and stroke rate
20' ut1 pressure at 22-24 spm and 95 drag factor
5' warm down
target u1 split: 2:01/500m
Actual:
10' warm up at ut3/ut2
15' ut1 pressure at 22-23 spm and 88 drag factor
5' warm down
ut1 avg split: 1:59.5/500m
Post workout thoughts:
Felt a little heavy (especially through arms and shoulders) through the warm up and into the ut1. Power was there, it just wasn't as comfortable as I expected. Had issues sleeping last night (slept 7:30 pm to 12:30 am then 7 to 8 am.) No doubt that was a contributing factor.
In retrospect it probably would have been better to do 4x5' with 1' rest and keep the split around 2:01/500m. Hindsight is 20/20 though. Still trying to separate my expectations for now from from my 24 year old self.
Next non-UT2 workout will be an Anaerobic Threshold (AT) session in 8-10 days. TR and UT1 both lost volume to pacing issues so I'll keep that in mind for the next anaerobic session. Conservative is the way to go at this early stage in the game. I expect it will take a couple months to get back into the swing of things and I don't want to derail that by overreaching too soon.

My name is Travis. Fifteen years ago I was a pretty fast rower, then life happened. Now I'm 38, father to a 3 year old, and starting a new career. I've spent 12 years as a professional rowing coach helping athletes unlock their potential.
A year ago I was 204 lbs and struggling with numerous health issues. Now I'm at 172 lbs and much healthier, but the struggle is real and I'm taking it one day at a time. Target weight is 150 lbs (I'm 5'8") while eating as much as I want, when I want.
Welcome to my journey.
This vlog will chronicle my training and my return to a healthy and fit lifestyle. I hope that by sharing my experience and insights, you may find it easier to achieve success on your own journey. It'll also help keep me accountable :)
