Writing a good research question sets the whole context of your research paper. It’s important that you formulate a good research question and it’s equally essential to articulate it well. So, how do you come up with a really good research question? There are a few key points to consider:
The first thing to remember while creating a good research question is to make sure that your research question is novel. In other words, there isn’t another research group that is doing parallel work that you could encounter later down the road, leaving you with novelty issues that could cost you years of research.
The second point that will affect the quality of your research question is to make sure that the focus of your study is on work that you are already doing in your lab to some degree. This means that the protocols that are going to be required, for all your experiments, have already been optimized, or at least most of them. Having to optimize every single one of your protocols is going to cost you precious time that you could be spending on your experiments.
The third factor to consider while writing a research question is to make sure that you are able to carry out all of the necessary experiments needed for an impactful study. This might require you to make some collaboration with other labs, and that’s OK, just make sure it’s done before your study starts.
The fourth and most important thing to remember while creating a good research question is to make sure your research question is about something that you are excited about. If you do not like your research and you are not passionate about it, it is going to feel like torture. So, make sure that you like it because that is going to make your research and your results even more impactful.
