Bill Norkett flips his 1955 Ford Thunderbird during a Measured Mile run at Daytona Beach. Bill was traveling at around 130 mph down the beach when he swerved to the right to avoid a rough water-soaked portion of the beach raceway. While trying to correct, Norkett loses control of his Thunderbird and flips wildly down the beach with his car coming to rest on its roof and catching fire. Deputy Sheirff Walter Braren managed to cut Norkett's safety-belt free and pull Norkett out of the burning car. Bill received multiple bruises in the crash and was treated at Halifax Hospital for a badly burnt arm. Upon his return to Chicago, Norkett was diagnosed with a fractured spine but according to his wife Barbara he had no lasting health issues.
