(12 Aug 2014) A Chinese medical team arrived in Guinea on Monday to train local doctors in the use of protective clothing as the country battles the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
A Chinese plane carrying medical equipment worth 1.6 (m) million US dollars, donated by the Chinese government, also arrived in Conakry.
The equipment is designed to help the Guinean government fight Ebola, according to Chinese officials.
Liu Linna, who heads the delegation, said upon arrival in Conakry the team would be providing training to local medical staff on how to use the equipment.
Liberia likewise announced that a donation of protective gear from China was on its way there on Monday.
A shortage of full-body suits and even clean surgical gloves has left health workers exposed to the virus and prompted some to refuse to treat Ebola patients.
The disease has spread rapidly in the West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, killing more than 900 people since it emerged in Guinea in March.
The current outbreak is the largest since Ebola first emerged in Africa nearly 40 years ago.
Health workers say the virus can be stopped when managed properly.
People in the affected countries are asked to wear gloves,among other health tips, to avoid infection.
