Excerpt from the educative concerto "New Forms in Old Bottles" - with members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE).
This fusion of concert and educational event was originally primarily aimed at 14-16-year-old students of the Stoke Newington Media & Arts College. It is however a fascinating lesson for anyone who would like to know more about the difference between period and modern stringed instruments, as well as musical forms in string quartets, particularly the sonata form. Clearly and interestingly explained by Marshall Marcus, examples of the various forms discussed are then played by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) Quartet, and eventually by some of the students. Mozart’s String Quartet in C, K 157 features heavily, with Haydn and Beethoven in strong support.
