Torsional effects may significantly modify the seismic response of buildings, and they have caused severe
damage or collapse of structures in several past earthquakes. These effects occur due to different reasons,
such as no uniform distribution of the mass, stiffness and strength.
Torsion effects in buildings increase lateral deflections in the weaker direction and decrease
in the stronger direction. These effects occur due to the difference between the center of mass and
center of rigidity under lateral loads. While it is not feasible to completely eliminate torsional
effects in structural engineering, designers strive to mitigate them to ensure structural integrity.
Factors such as building geometry, floor plan irregularities, and mass/stiffness distribution influence
torsional forces. Techniques like symmetric layouts, bracing systems, and strategic placement of structural
elements help minimize torsional effects and enhance building performance (torsionally restrained system is shown in the lower part of the video).
Careful analysis and consideration of torsional effects during the design process are crucial for ensuring safety and stability.
