Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) was only 18 when he composed his Preludes. The first Prelude is rather post Romantic in style, with a left-hand accompaniment reminiscent of a Nocturne and Chopin’s poetic works. Szymanowski’s later compositional output is fascinating too as it evolves markedly from his earlier works, with impressionistic, nationalist/folk and even atonal influences. A selection of Szymanowski’s Preludes featured in my ‘Concerts with an Audience’ residency programming in Sydney during the month of October (joining Chopin and Liszt who were also commemorated that month).
